Opening from and closing into gentle whispers over a snare ostinato and steady quarter note pulses in the low voices, the dynamic swell and ebb of this setting of WYE VALLEY depicts all the majestic, stately, abiding grandeur of a mighty river and, despite its brevity, portrays a sense of perpetuity. And this in itself is a metaphor of the order, peace, and timelessness of God’s eternal kingdom. With a short introduction and conclusion the music takes one turn through the WYE VALLEY melody to create an orchestral prelude from the graceful tune. “Like a River Glorious” is meant to be ready to play in one sitting and so can be added to your program with little fuss. It functions well as a liturgical prelude or postlude or it would be well-fitted to a transitional role, even in a secular setting.
